In the Shadow of War and Empire: Industrialisation, Nation-Building, and Working-Class Politics in Turkey

Görkem Akgöz

Görkem Akgöz traces Ottoman and Turkish industrialisation through the workers, managers, and institutions surrounding a state-owned cotton factory from the nineteenth century through the aftermath of World War II. The factory itself becomes a lens on nation-building, labor discipline, gender, migration, and class politics. By connecting shop-floor experience to war, empire, and changing political regimes, the book shows that industrial growth was never simply a technical project. It was also a contested social process that reshaped citizenship and working-class life.
